How to Care for your Jacket

🧼 How to Clean and Rewax Your Wax Jacket: A Complete Guide

A waxed jacket is more than just outerwear—it’s a timeless investment. With the right care, your jacket can last for decades, maintaining both its performance and classic aesthetic even in the harshest conditions. In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to clean and rewax your wax jacket at home, and when to call in the experts.

🧽 Cleaning Your Wax Jacket: Step-by-Step

Before diving into the cleaning process, it’s important to know what not to do:

  • ❌ Never machine wash or dry clean your wax jacket—this strips the protective wax coating.
  • ❌ Avoid tumble drying or exposing it to direct sunlight.
  • âś… Always clean by hand in a well-ventilated space.

1. Brush Off Dirt

Lay your jacket flat and use a soft-bristled brush to gently remove surface dirt and dust. Avoid scrubbing or using abrasive materials.

2. Wipe Down with Cold Water

Use a sponge or moleskin cloth dampened with cold water to wipe the jacket clean. Do not use soap or detergent. Pay special attention to areas like the underside of the collar and turned-up sleeves.

3. Clean the Inside

For the lining, use a cloth dampened with white vinegar to neutralize odours and remove mildew. Don’t let the vinegar sit for more than 10 minutes.

4. Air Dry

Hang your jacket in a cool, ventilated area away from direct sunlight. Turn up the collar and turn out the pockets to ensure thorough drying.

🛠️ Rewaxing Your Jacket

Once your jacket is clean and dry, it’s time to reproof it. You can do this at home or send it to our Repair & Rewax Service.

🕯️ What You’ll Need:

  • Thornproof Wax Dressing (6oz for classic styles like the Ashby or Bedale)
  • Soft cloth or sponge
  • Hot water (to melt the wax)
  • Optional: Mini Reproofing Kit (includes wax, sponge applicator, and tartan cloth)

🔥 How to Rewax:

  1. Heat the wax tin in hot water for 20 minutes until it liquefies.
  2. Apply the wax evenly using a sponge or cloth.
  3. Pay attention to seams and high-wear areas.
  4. Let the jacket hang overnight in a cool area—away from other garments, as excess wax may transfer.

Note: Rewaxing may temporarily darken your jacket or give it a sheen, especially with lighter colours like olive.

🧵 Special Features to Consider

  • Studded Collars & Hoods: Clean and rewax both jacket and hood together to maintain colour consistency.
  • Nylon Hoods: Clean but do not rewax—wax is not suitable for nylon.
  • Dog Coats & Non-Waxed Jackets: Use Nikwax Tech Wash for non-waxed items.

🧼 Keep Your Jacket Looking Brand New

We recommend cleaning and rewaxing your jacket once a year, or more frequently if worn often
